I create spatial installations in which I often incorporate photographic elements. Rather than seeing photography as an end in itself, I use it to open up multiple interpretations. I frequently work with perspective, projection, reflection and scale, while challenging photographic conventions by, for example, turning two-dimensional images into sculptures or questioning the status of photography and its presumed objectivity.
I draw much of my inspiration from the family systems theory and neuropsychology. My practice is driven by a fascination for the ways in which people continuously construct stories to make sense of the world, and how memories, images and beliefs influence one another.
Despite this interest in the workings of the mind, my process is distinctly physical. I strain myself and my materials, forcing them into forms they resist or making them do something they were never intended to do. The compromise reached within that struggle ultimately becomes the work itself. In this way, I try to postpone, for as long as possible, the urge of my own mind to assign meaning to everything I see during the process of making.

BACKGROUND
2002-2025
Before studying Fine Arts, Saskia worked as a freelance journalist, communications consultant and professional coach. She wrote feature stories for newspapers including Volkskrant Magazine and Het Parool, advised organizations during periods of change, and coached individuals and teams in recognizing behavioral patterns and underlying dynamics.
