I Only See the Gaps I (June 2025)
Inherited textiles, Paverpol, desk lamps
My mother found comfort in the idea that, at the end of her life, she would experience the interconnectedness of everything around her: of objects, of the living and the dead, of the past and the present.
Shortly before she died, we spoke about the meaning of home. She told me that because she had moved so often throughout her life, it was no longer places that felt like home, but her belongings. She believed that her own life, and the lives of those she loved, were stored within them. That is why she never threw anything away.
After her death, I decided to build new “homes” from the things she left behind. Using all of her white textiles, I made casts of rooms and objects from my past and projected them into the present, slightly displaced from how they once were—like a memory that can never quite recover its original form.
For one of the hotel rooms at De Groene Afslag in Bussum, I created a new permanent installation based on this work, titled This Room Has Moved (see also: De Groene Afslag).
