The Way We Were (2023)
Our Chair I
Our Chair II
Our Table I
Remembered furniture made from 50 m² of paper pulp derived from painted dreams and memories, held together with masking tape.
The material from which these pieces are made originates from an earlier work (Room 720). For that project, I completely covered Room 720 at the academy with paper and spent fifteen hours painting my dreams and memories directly onto its surfaces. When the room had to be emptied again, I tore the painted paper into small pieces by hand and blended it into pulp. From this pulp, I sculpted the furniture.
I am the only one who knows that my memories and dreams are embedded within these objects, yet because I have covered them with a skin of masking tape, nothing of that history remains visible. Everyone must therefore take my word for it.
In that sense, the furniture is not so different from us. We are all shaped and charged by a past that can only be accessed through the stories we tell about it. Whether those stories are true is something no one can ever really know.
